Attending Media & Journalism Week 2018

Journalism week has been an annual event at Leeds Trinity University for a decade. Over the years the event has grown to include a wider variety of speakers, include students from Media courses and be of greater value to all students who attend.

As a level 4, Media and Marketing student this was my first year attending the Leeds Trinity Media and Journalism Week (LTMJW). My key areas of interest, digital marketing and social media, was not heavily represented during the 4 day event so I went in with a sceptical mindset, unsure of what the talks would bring to me. The three key talks I chose to attend were; Sandy Smith — Editor of The One Show, Dan Roberts — Brexit Policy Editor of The Guardian and Becky Anderson — Freelance Publicist.

The first two of my selected events were ‘walk in’ talks. The aim was to get a better understanding of these working professionals industry and what it takes to work in similar roles. Smith and Roberts didn’t work in my industry of interest, despite this I put my best effort in to take as much as I could regarding the media industry as a whole. A key quote of Dan Roberts has continued to stick in my mind since the event. The successful political journalist said ‘Just Say Yes’, the industry is tough to break into and most employers will value a positive, can do attitude — particularly to new tasks that the employee has not yet come across.

By coincidence I saved the best till last. On the final day of the event I booked to attend Becky Anderson’s workshop.

I really enjoyed Becky’s workshop and thought that she had so much experience and advice to pass on. As I run my own blog and consider myself a ‘content creator’ it was interesting to learn more about the digital side of the media industry which I felt the rest of the week had lacked. I made pages of notes from characteristics of the industry, what makes good PR and the best way to get into the job.

Becky enlightened me to a new area of media (entertainment PR); this has broaden my knowledge of the media world and sparked a new interested.

Overall, I’m glad I attended the sessions I did over the course of the week. For future events I hope that more speakers from a digital marketing background are brought in to share their knowledge.
