Traditional Journalism vs. Social Media Journalism

Traditional Journalism vs. Social Media Journalism

Interest/Google Searches related to traditional Journalism (Blue) and social media Journalism (Red) over a span of 12 months.

Using Google Trends, I conducted a comparison between the interest of traditional journalism and social media journalism through Google searches. Traditional journalism, the blue line, includes the classic ways of sharing the news, such as through newspapers and on cable news channels. Social media journalism, the red line, is how journalism is shared online and viewed through social media platforms such as: Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.

Looking at the past twelve months, I have found that traditional journalism and social media journalism intersected with each other solely one time over the course of twelve months. As presented in the graph above, traditional journalism increased in searches while digital journalism dropped during a week in the month of November. I find this to be interesting because, while there are times where the number of searches equalize or have similar drops and increases, this seems to be the only time where the searches for traditional and social media journalism look to intersect with each other. In addition, another finding that I found interesting was digital journalism is slowly decreasing in interest. Based on the graph above, social media journalism was highly searched in late 2017, possibly due to its inclusion into social media platforms. However, looking at the number of searches in recent months, it looks as if the interest in social media journalism is decreasing based upon how many users look at the news on social media.
